50 years

In close co-operation with customers, Cavotec has led the development of innovative solutions for e-vessels since 2014. By the end of 2020, our automated mooring and charging solutions will be used at more than 60 sites. Mooring and charging in a single system

Cavotec’s combined MoorMaster™ automated mooring technology and Automatic Plug-in System (APS) is a single revolutionary platform that enables the fast, safe and efficient mooring and charging of e-vessels.

Combining MoorMaster™ and APS into a single system ensures seamless vessel mooring and charging, and offers operators the best of both technologies:

  • Superior integration maximises safety benefits, charging time, reliability
  • Integrated user interface and communication architecture
  • Unique mooring and charging capabilities combined

Cavotec supplied combined mooring and charging to the world’s first electric ferry in 2015 and today the combined system is in operation at a growing number of Ro/Ro passenger applications across the Nordic region.

Our Automatic Plug-in System(APS) provides fast connection and disconnection for e-ferries, maximizing charging capacity during off- and on-loading.

  • Short charging times
  • Safe operations due to electrical interlocks
  • Limited infrastructure costs
  • Minimum modification required for vehicles and ships
  • Robust design reduces maintenance costs

Our automated mooring solution, MoorMaster™, moors vessels in seconds and keeps vessels in position for safe charging and allows thrusters to be shut off, drastically reducing energy consumption.

  • Vessels moored in less than 30 seconds
  • Safe and efficient charging due to reduced vessel motion
  • Reduced energy consumption
  • Improved safety with no personnel required on the quayside Potential reduction in size of battery units Vessel overhang possible, resulting in reduced infrastructure costs
  • Potential reduction in size of battery units
  • Vessel overhang possible, resulting in reduced infrastructure costs

Operator: Norled

Challenge

  • High frequency ferry route with 16-50 moorings per day
  • Serviced by the world’s first fully electrical ferry, Ampere, since 2015
  • Need for frequent charging and low energy consumption
  • Local power grid only supports limited power consumption

Solution

  • Cavotec’s APS charging solution charges the vessel during each port stay
  • MoorMaster™️ system installed to keep the vessel moored in an exact position for nine out of ten minutes each port stay
  • Batteries at each shore for peak-shaving

Key benefits

  • Zero emissions as ferry is fully electric
  • Reduced energy consumption due to fast mooring reduces costs and enables smaller batteries on ship and on shore
  • Reduced power supply infrastructure needed on shore due to stable vessel position and reduced power requirement when vessel is moored Reduced fuel consumption for two conventional ferries using the same MoorMaster™️ system
